Insulation Calculator

Work out how many bags or rolls of insulation you need for an attic, wall, or floor — plus an estimate of the cost.

How to calculate insulation

Insulation is estimated by area and the coverage of each bag or roll:

Bags or rolls = area ÷ coverage per bag/roll (rounded up)

For batts, coverage is the square footage one roll or bundle covers. For blown-in insulation, the coverage per bag drops as the R-value rises — a deeper layer covers fewer square feet, so always read the bag's coverage chart for your target R-value.

Common R-value targets

LocationTypical R-value
AtticR-38 to R-49
2x4 wallsR-13 to R-15
2x6 wallsR-19 to R-21
FloorsR-25 to R-30

Batts vs. blown-in

  • Batts/rolls suit open walls, floors, and standard joist spacing — cut to fit between framing.
  • Blown-in covers attic floors fast and fills awkward gaps, but needs a blower (often free to rent with purchase).
  • Wear protection. Gloves, a mask, and goggles are a must with any insulation.

Frequently asked questions

How much insulation for a 1,200 sq ft attic?
At 40 sq ft of coverage per bag, that's about 30 bags — but check the coverage chart for your target R-value, as it changes the count.
What R-value does my attic need?
Usually R-38 to R-49 depending on climate. Check your local energy code.
Batts or blown-in?
Batts for open framing; blown-in for attic floors and filling gaps. Both list coverage on the package.
How much extra should I buy?
Add 5–10% for trimming and gaps, and round up to whole bags or rolls.
